The White Mountains Recreation Area has over 200 miles of trails, encapsulating true Alaskan wilderness right on the backdoor of Fairbanks. The area offers stunning scenery, peaceful solitude and outstanding opportunities for those with a taste of adventure. If you are looking for a hike into the wilderness with breathtaking scenery, this will be the right place for you.

The Wickersham Dome Trail is one of the most popular hiking trails in the White Mountains, close to Fairbanks, 28 miles up the Elliot Highway. The trail is defined by elevation gain with quick and dramatic rewards. At its start, you’ll follow gradual ebbs and flows through alpine forest and rocky terrain covered in moss, lichens, and wildflowers. Makeshift stairsteps appear as the path starts to wind around and up to the crest of the Dome. This stretch has the steepest climb, but hikers immediately enjoy expansive views of Interior wilderness with plenty of places to stop for a break. Large rocks at the top are popular for bouldering or to kick back, rehydrate, and take in the view.

This trail is an enjoyable hike, and it’s considered to be one of the nicest hikes outside of Fairbanks due to its alpine setting, long views, low crowds, and mild terrain. The trail is clearly defined and is usually void of much mud. In late summer, it is perfect for low-bush blueberry picking. Wildlife is also abundant here. Caribou, Dall sheep, moose, grizzlies, black bears, and many species of birds make their home in the White Mountains. The long-range visibility afforded to hikers on this trail will help you spot wildlife before coming too close.
